They really handicapped themselves far more than they needed to.
Pick an era and then look at what were the bikes that finished in gold and silver? That’s where you start and with proper prep on a good bike you might even finish.

It could be Vittorio at another time – it’s a big bloke in that picture.

But, different helmet, boots – but of course, a lot of us have heaps of different ‘kit’.

It’s a different engine from pictures of Vittorio – just look at the front casing and main casing, and a few other details

There are a few companies making GS Schek replicas and Rahier rep Dakar bikes. HPN are still around, and I think I recall a company under the name of Gelande Sport (or using some part of the ‘GS’ designation. ) listing builds. All out of my price range though, unless I sell off a TT2 . I’d fit better on a Schek replica, that’s for sure, as a TT2 is just so bloody tiny for me, nowadays.

I agree with you on the Jumbo class.

fwiw, there was an ADV tour running during the event, expensive and fancy. Never saw anyone on it, but it would be fun to do.

There’s also a vintage ISDT, in Corsica (I think). I’m going to check that out some day….

Man, where were you at this event? I rode there and saw a couple BMWs on the entry list, and even though I had a press pass and could get into the Parc Ferme, I could not find you. Would have love to shoot some pics of your bikes!

Is this one of you guys?

During the event, I was as usual, scouring the ‘net for daily ISDE videos.

One of which had Vittorio Veggetti ( I now know through this article) on his BM in a Special Test. The ‘Endurocross’ type with so many man made obstacles.

There were plenty of riders having croppers over the logs etc, and then there was Vittorio, wrestling his GS – an original type, Not a bloody modern Land Yacht – around the course. I put up the video on a few sites, pointing out the BM ( which I commented on, IF it were an original GS, such as what the great Herbert Schek rode, was probably THE most valuable bike in the whole event) for the so many who would have had No idea of the existence of the Jumbo Class in decades gone by.

Good to learn the story of the Team, and, I do think I had a brief sighting of the HD, that had me wondering, WTH? Bummer that none finished, but Vittorio getting to the 4th day is pretty bloody impressive.

I’d love to see the re-introduction of the Jumbo Class – enough manufactures do 650/660 through to 890 /900cc twins, that could be built to suite – and, the genuine ‘tiddlers’ such as 50s etc. But, the ISDE has, unfortunately, to me, become rather streamlined / limited with the classes, over the last four decades.

The only bone to pick I have is that all of the bikes had at least front disc brakes, and only the BMs had rear drums. But, without a doubt, all of that mass and momentum – especially the HD – would have been hard to slow down / stop with. One BM looked to have RWU 50mm Showa forks, and Vittorios’ BM looked to have a Marzocchi front end, the HD looked to have 50mm WP RWUs .

Thank you again!
